Such a great guitar track, always sounds like he’s playing on the ‘edge’.

Enjoy

Grant Green

Green had a mainly single note style and, whilst some of you may not be familiar with him, ypou’ve probably heard him on various hip hop records as his late 60s and early 70s material was of a decidedly funky nature rather than just Jazz. However, he died quite early at the age of 44.

This video has two tunes, so enjoy.

New Unknown Jazz Guitarist – Hussein Boon

leave a comment »

Was wandering around You Tube, looking for any interesting guitar pieces and found this one by a new artist I’d not heard about. Doesn’t seem to have any videos and they’ve uploaded sound with static images. The tune is really cool: reminds me of quite a few jazz guitarists but is also unique enough not to be entirely derivative. The song is called Mellow and let me tell you, it truly is. Check it out and enjoy.

Till next time

Esther Philiips – Classic Raregroove

leave a comment »

Whilst Gil Scott-Heron is the original and should be credited for influencing so many rappers, this song performed by Esther Phillips has got to be one of my all time faves. A hard subject matter allied to a brilliant arrangement with a voice riding the changes. The rhythm section just grooves (check the B-Line); horns are funky; the strings are of the classic blaxploitation variety.

Enjoy

Still A Fave – Teardrop Massive Attack

After all these years I still love hearing her voice. Yes, I have a soft spot for Liz Fraser. There’s an ephemeral, motion to her voice. I don’t care what the words mean, especially having consumed so much Cocteau Twins, the shape and twists and turns of the melody does it all for me.

Enjoy

I Hate 4 x 4s

But I Hate Music Industry People More …. Discuss

I do. I really do.
I saw a 4×4 knock a cyclist over the other day. The cyclist was travelling with two others. The driver of the 4×4 got out and proceeded to have an argument with the cyclist and his mates, implying it was the cyclists’ fault. The argument continued with the usual posturing and threats. To be honest it was going nowhere.

But then fate has a hand in turning the dramatic into the ridiculous and up popped the passenger from the 4×4. She gets out of the car and ventures towards the scene. She’s obviously bored and needs to be getting on with her rather busy life.  She pulls the 4×4 driver back to the car and, as she gets in, she screams at the still angry cyclists, ‘”why don’t you get a proper job”. I’ve never heard anyone use this argument before. We have, by way of this woman, discovered the reason road accidents really happen. It’s not because anyone is careless, drunk or crap. It’s because they haven’t sought gainful employment. After that carefully chosen comment they proceed to drive off.

So, what has this story to do with the music industry? The licence plate on the 4×4 was MUSIC PR. Give them a toot should you see them on the road.

I’m not sure who should get a proper job. What do you think?
